A New Book About the Intelligence Has Been Written By Hryhoriy Rudenko

April 18, 2018

At the end of last year, the Chairman of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine Yehor Bozhok, while greeting the veteran of the intelligence Hryhoriy Rudenko on the professional holiday, promised to help publish a long ago written book of Hryhoriy Rudenko’s thoughts about the Foreign Intelligence.
April 18, 2018, they met again at the veteran’s home, and the head of the SZRU personally handed to the 93-year-old Hryhoriy Rudenko the published with the assistance of the SZRU in a hard cover 440-page book “Foreign Intelligence: History and Facts. Investigations, Memoirs, Reflections”.

According to Hryhoriy Rudenko himself, to write a book of memoirs about his work during the Cold War, and in general to share his thoughts about the role of intelligence in the history of mankind, he had repeatedly been advised by the Head of the Fund of Veterans of the Foreign Intelligence of Ukraine Lieutenant-General of the Reserve Leonid Rozhen, asking him to recall the past and return to writing. For a long time Hryhoriy Matviyovych did not dare. And only after his 90th birthday he began to generalize his vision and express his own understanding of this rather specific kind of human activity.

In his book Hryhoriy Rudenko tried to systematize the history of the Foreign Intelligence and to tell about its bright representatives from times immemorial to nowadays. Along with this there are quotes by prominent intelligence officers, as well as the author’s thoughts about the role and place of intelligence in society, secret diplomacy, professionalism, ethics of an intelligence officer, analytical work, operational proficiency of agents and other important components of this special profession. Some chapters of the book are devoted to the author’s memories of his life and his many years of intelligence work during the Cold War, which will also be of considerable interest to readers in the context of understanding the historical processes of the Soviet period, their perception and assessment by active officers of special services of that time.

“Foreign Intelligence: History and Facts” is not the first book by Hryhoriy Rudenko. In his time, he wrote many articles on intelligence and diplomatic service, published several monographs. In his life he was a participant in many events that radically changed the history of mankind. During the Second World War, he served as a seaman apprentice on a destroyer, studied at the Sevastopol Naval School, volunteered to the Battalion of the Marine Corps, participated in battles in the Caucasus and against militaristic Japan. After the war, H. Rudenko for many years worked in the sphere of Foreign Intelligence, fulfilling important tasks abroad. Having retired, he worked until 2009 at the Office of the Diplomatic Corps in the posts of First Deputy Chief of the Department, Deputy Director General, and then Advisor. Hryhoriy Matviyovych Rudenko completely retired to a well-deserved rest at the age of 84, having more than 65 years of occupational life in his employment book.
