The SZRU Chairman’s Greetings on the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation

Dear Colleagues and Veterans!

It is natural that for the fifth consecutive year on the eighth of May, we mark the Day of Remembrance and Reconciliation with the majority of European countries, because exactly at 23:00 on May 8, 1945, fire was stopped and in Europe was the first minute of the hard won peace. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in the resolution dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in Europe.

The Second World War was the most terrible war in history. In it, the multitude of human and national tragedies merged into an epic picture, which still makes one’s blood freeze, despite the tens and tens of years that have passed. 65 million people were killed all over the world, eight to ten million of them were Ukrainians. During that war two million young men and women were taken out of Ukraine to perform forced labor. That war meant living death and concentration camps. In the hell of Babyn Yar alone, Nazis killed more than one hundred and fifty thousand Ukrainian Jews.

Almost seven million our compatriots in the ranks of the Red Army fought against Nazism. Another hundred thousand – in the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and two hundred and fifty thousand – in the armed forces of the member states of the Anti-Hitler Coalition. Priceless was also the heroism of those who raised cities and villages from scorched ruins, rebuilt the destroyed national economy, laid the foundations of independent Ukraine. These people today teach us wisdom, endurance, patience and optimism.

My deepest respect and honour to all the veterans of the Second World War, to the participants of the Ukrainian liberation movement, to all who had gone through the horrors of the Nazi persecution.

I wish all the employees and veterans of the Foreign Intelligence of Ukraine, members of their families excellent health, family happiness and well-being, inspiration and energy in serving our Motherland. Let peace and harmony come to our land as soon as possible.

Glory to all who defended and are defending Ukraine from aggression!

Glory to Ukraine!
